13 Things Americans Are Demanding to Be Banned

Banning things has become a hot topic lately, with Americans demanding a wide range of items and practices be prohibited. From plastic straws to certain books, it seems like there’s always something new that a group wants gone.

While some of these demands may seem extreme or even ridiculous, they often stem from valid concerns about public health, safety, or ethics. In this article, I discuss 13 things that Americans are currently calling to be banned.

1. Plastic Straws

Environmentalists argue plastic straws should be banned as they are a major contributor to pollution, pushing for paper or reusable alternatives instead. However, some argue plastic straws are essential for those with disabilities and a ban would negatively impact them. The debate around plastic straw bans continues.

2. Gas-Powered Cars

With climate change concerns, some activists demand banning new gas-powered vehicles to reduce emissions. Automakers are shifting to electric cars, but a full gas car ban is divisive among environmentalists and the auto industry.

3. Assault Weapons

In the wake of mass shootings, gun control advocates push for banning assault-style weapons like the AR-15, while 2nd Amendment supporters staunchly oppose such bans as an infringement on rights.

4. Vaping Products

Citing risks to youth and lack of long-term studies, many want all vaping devices and e-cigarettes banned. The vape industry pushes back, saying these products help adult smokers quit.

5. Styrofoam Products

From containers to packaging peanuts, polystyrene foam products face bans in many places due to environmental impacts and non-biodegradability that endangers wildlife if ingested.

6. Tanning Beds

With heightened skin cancer risks, health advocates want to ban commercial tanning beds and lamps, especially for minors’ access. But the tanning industry disputes these claims.

7. Menthol Cigarettes

Some want menthol cigarettes banned, as the distinct flavoring increases appeal to youth and makes quitting harder. The tobacco industry objects to such bans, arguing they should have a right to sell legal products. Reports indicate menthol cigarettes are more popular among African American smokers as well. The debate around these products remains heated.

8. Wild Animals As Pets

Citing conservation and public safety reasons, many want to ban keeping wild animals like tigers, bears, and venomous snakes as personal pets. They argue private individuals lack the proper resources and expertise to care for these animals humanely. Incidents of attacks or escapes have also fueled concerns. However, some exotic pet owners claim they can raise them responsibly.

9. TikTok

Citing data privacy and security concerns over TikTok’s ties to China, some U.S. officials have floated the idea of banning the wildly popular social media app from operating in America.

They fear data could be accessed by China’s government for nefarious purposes. TikTok denies any wrongdoing while its young user base desperately hopes for no ban.

10. Violent Video Games

A small but vocal group sees ultra-violent and graphic video games as desensitizing and wants them banned, especially from sales to minors. They blame these games for increased aggression and even real-world violence. But the industry argues such content is protected free speech and parental guidance tools exist.

11. Homeless Encampments

Frustrated citizens and business owners have pushed cities to ban camping and clear homeless encampments from public spaces, citing issues like trash, crime, and safety.

Critics call these policies dehumanizing that don’t address root affordable housing causes. The homelessness crisis remains a complex challenge.

12. Seismic Testing

Environmental groups want to ban offshore seismic testing for oil and gas, citing harmful impacts on marine life from the extremely loud shockwaves used. The testing helps locate fossil fuel reserves but can damage whale habitats. The energy industry says existing guidelines are sufficient.

13. Child Beauty Pageants

Often considered exploitative, there’s an ongoing debate about banning child beauty pageants that overly sexualize and objectify young girls with costumes, makeup and routines.

Opponents argue the pageants instill confidence and poise in participants. But critics see them as sending unhealthy messages on appearance.

Conclusion

Debates around banning controversial products, services, and activities remain heated and complex. While protecting public health, safety, and ethics is crucial, any potential bans must carefully weigh both benefits and unintended negative consequences before implementation.
