13 Things to Stop Doing Once You’re Over 60

Once you hit 60, it’s time to get real about your golden years. You’re not young anymore, so certain things just don’t fly after a certain age. As much as you may want to keep living like a 20-something, the reality is that you are officially old now whether you like it or not.

But being over the hill doesn’t have to be bad. Giving up some outdated habits could actually improve your life. Let’s look at 13 things every awesome senior should stop doing once they join the over 60 club.

1. Staying Up Late

Your body can’t handle those all-nighters like it used to. Lack of sleep can be really harmful for seniors. It’s better to get on a reasonable sleep schedule and get 7-9 hours per night. Going to bed early isn’t just for kids anymore. Insufficient rest leaves you drained and impacts your health.

2. Eating Junk Food

An unhealthy diet catches up quick after 60. Trade those greasy chips and candy for nutrient-rich foods that are good for your aging body and mind. Your teeth and weight will thank you too. Too much junk leads to issues like obesity, diabetes, and low energy.

3. Smoking Cigarettes

There’s no excuse to keep up this nasty, toxic habit later in life. Smoking will absolutely wreck your health and make you feel miserable as a senior. It’s never too late to quit. The sooner you stop, the better for your lungs and overall well being.

4. Binge Drinking

Having a beer or glass of wine is fine, but frequent excessive drinking is incredibly hard on an older body. It can mess with medications, sleep, and balance too. Limit alcohol intake significantly. Binge drinking increases risk of injuries and health woes.

5. Ignoring Health Issues

At this age, you can’t just brush off symptoms or avoid doctors anymore. Take any potential health problems seriously and get them checked out promptly. Being proactive beats an emergency. Ignoring issues now leads to bigger problems later.

6. Living Sedentary

Sitting around all day is the fast track to health woes as a senior. Make sure to incorporate some light daily exercise and movement into your routine. It’ll keep you mobile and independent. An inactive lifestyle can be disabling over time.

7. Working Constantly

If you’re fortunate enough to retire, actually retire! Stop grinding away at your job and carve out time for relaxation, hobbies, and loved ones that you missed out on. Your sunset years are meant for enjoying life outside of work. Too much work leaves little time for other priorities.

8. Neglecting Finances

Have you planned sufficiently for retirement? Make sure your money situation is in order so you can fully enjoy your later years without constant worry. Poor planning leads to financial stress down the road.

9. Caring What Others Think

At this stage, you’ve gotta stop bending over backwards worrying about everyone else’s perceptions and opinions of you. Live authentically! Other people’s judgments are irrelevant to your happiness.

10. Procrastinating

When you get to a certain age, there’s no more putting things off endlessly. Take care of your responsibilities and bucket list items while you still can. Don’t leave dreams unfulfilled due to laziness.

11. Being Stuck in a Rut

Branch out and embrace new hobbies/interests that make you come alive after years of the same routines. Expose yourself to fresh experiences! A rut leads to boredom and dissatisfaction in your later years.

12. Acting Immature

There’s a difference between being playful and outright immature. It’s time to leave behind the impulsive and obnoxious behavior once you’re a senior citizen. Immaturity is unbecoming and alienating at this stage of life..

13. Tech Illiteracy

Make an effort to stop falling behind when it comes to technology and smart devices. They can open up worlds and connections as a senior. Being tech illiterate cuts you off from many modern conveniences.

Conclusion

Getting older doesn’t have to mean giving up on life – it’s just time to make some adjustments. By quitting the unhealthy habits and unwise behaviors on this list, you can embrace your golden years with more vitality, purpose and peace of mind.
